Old-time Animal Drawings
A Facebook page that does just what the name says: a collection of zoological graphics from the 16th to the early 20th century. This is Poland’s most popular overview of digitised collections, and has earned cult status. People get tattoos of its depictions of animals, bake cookies shaped like the figures, make memes and gifs from them and use them in all kinds of other ways.
Łukasz Kozak’s idea for Old-time pictures was simple, based on his experience with Discarding Images: to publish high-quality historical content including source information. Animals from old zoological drawings – sometimes beautiful, sometimes terrifying and sometimes funny and clumsy – turned out to be the ideal choice, attracting tens of thousands of users.
Old-time Animal Drawings has also moved beyond the digital world, with an exhibition organised in 2016 by Brama Poznania, drawing more than 10,000 visitors. The page has also provided inspiration and material for the Hybridizer application, created by Kajetan Obarski and Igor Hardy in collaboration with Kozak.
